Memorizing Scripture

I have been thinking a lot about Scripture memorization this week. My mom has been working through a book called 100 Bible Verses Everyone Should Know by Heart (Robert J. Morgan). She's been working on her scripture memorization skills. There was also an article in the new Christianity Today on this very topic. So, I’m curious as to your thoughts on scripture memorization. Some simple questions I would love to have you answer.

Does anyone memorize scripture anymore?

If you do…
How do you memorize scripture?
What are your secrets?
What helps you?
What advice would you offer?

If you don’t…
Why don’t you memorize scripture? Age? Memory?

Tim, I really enjoy memorizing scripture. One of my New Years resolutions was to memorize one chapter a month this year and then to carry it down through my girls as well.

I write out what I am memorizing and hang it around the house (my favorite place is on the bathroom mirror). I find when it is present all around me I can't help but remember it!

Kristen, great practical idea about writing it out (I'm taking that to mean you write it out from memory after memorizing it?).

Thanks for sharing. How well do the girls do at memorizing?

Weeeeelllllllll, I am one of a group of people who would rather avoid the question because I haven't memorized more than 3 or 4 verses. I am still working on enforcing a daily reading of the Bible as one of my goals.
It will be interesting to see how others manage memorization.
I like the idea of hanging scripture around the house - kitchen cabinet, bathroom mirror, garage door, etc...That sounds like a good way to make it happen. Hmmmm, maybe I should start with Deuteronomy 6:4-9?

Nelson,
That Deuteronomy passage is a great place to start. If you do hang Scripture around just be sure to maybe move them every once in a while a little bit b/c you get used to them and where they sit after a while. At least I do. My wife writes Scripture on 3 x 5 cards all the time and has them in different areas of the house. I will see it the first day and read it and then I don't really see/pay attention to it much after that.
